No more PPV!

This season Sens fans are going to have a little bit more cash in their pockets.

The SUN reported this morning that the Senators will not be having any Pay-Per-View games this season.

This is mainly because of the larger number of games already confirmed to be broadcast by CBC, Sportsnet and TSN - 64.  Further CBC has yet to announce their regional schedule which will assuredly pick up another chunk of Saturday games AND RDS also tends to pick up some otherwise unbroadcast Sens games.

It’s not all good news though.  This means we can kiss pea soup interviews with Bryan Murray and tours of the Madison Square Garden urinals goodbye!

Sens rookie tournament wraps up

The Senators rookies ended the 2009 rookie tournament in Kitchener the same way the big boys finished off their dismal playoff run - losing to the Penguins!

It was a tight game with the young Sens getting pinched out 3-1 with Jim O’Brien (the Sens first round pick in 2005) getting the lone goal.

On Sunday they beat the Leafs rookie squad 7-5.  25 year old Jesse Winchester netted two in the win, while top prospects Ilja Zubov, Peter Regin, Mattias Karlsson and Alexander Nikulin also had two-point performances.  Jim O’Brien and Benoit Doucet scored the other two goals.

AND someone laid out a baby Leaf:

They also beat the Panthers rookies Saturday 4-2.  Mick Lawrence, a College grad on an amateur tryout, scored twice and added an assist for the Senators.  Shawn Weller, Ottawa’s 2004 3rd round pick, had a goal and two assists.  Jesse Winchester also got two assists and centre Ilja Zubov (fourth round, 2005) had the other goal.

Spezza nerds it up

How can some Senators’ fans not like Jason Spezza?

  • He’s committed himself to the community with his long-term contract last fall and his new 6 million dollar Island Park Drive
  • He’s one of the top (7th) points-per-game players in the NHL
  • He has an infectious laugh
  • And he’s a giant nerd …

Mez to Bolts

Murray can finally stop worrying about the Meszaros issue.  He’s gone!

Tampa wanted to sign Meszaros to an RFA offer sheet of about 5 million.  Unfortunately for them the organization failed to have the necessary compensation (1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks) required under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

However, given the Bolts only lacked the 3rd pick, it was clear to Murray that it was only a matter of time until they secured the necessary pick and Mez was leaving sooner than later.  Therefore, Murray went quickly to work to fashion a trade with the Lightening which would better serve Ottawa’s interests than the crap shoot that are 2nd and 3rd round picks.

The Sens eventually came away with a cool 1st round pick, 31 year old Filip Kuba, and prospect Alex Picard.  The later is actually a local kid from Gatineau.  Picard he had inadvertently shipped his equipment to Tampa only days before the trade…but I’m sure the hassle will be worth it for the chance to break into the NHL with his home town team!
